Resumen The area of study is located in the southeast part of the Neuquén Basin, close bya prolific Vaca Muerta shale oil field already under development. It has around 200 m of organic-rich shales thickening towards the northwest in the direction of the prograding depositional system. In the study area, the Vaca Muerta Formation is in the oil window and the thermal maturity decreases from southeast to northwestdue to the uplift of the structure in the eastern flank of the Añelo depocenter. The integration of a large amount of data acquired within the block provided new insight of the reservoir and its heterogeneity. This comprehensive study added further complexity than previously assumed to the future development of the field.During the delineation phase of the field, a thorough acquisition plan of static and dynamic data was carried out in vertical and horizontal wells. The acquired static data includes full log suites, cutting analysis, sidewall core, 233 m of continuous conventional core and borehole microseismic. The integrated analysis of this information with the newly acquired 3D seismic allowed a detailed characterization of both stratigraphic and geographic heterogeneity within the reservoir. As a result, different navigation levels were recognized and delimited throughout the study area. The nature of Vaca Muerta ś prograding system implies that those landings zones (LZs) developed in the aggrading section will be present throughout the basin. On the other hand, the LZs belonging to the organic sections of the progradations will be spatially restricted. Due to this particular geometry, in some regions within the study area there are only two landing zones present, whereas in other regions there are up to five. Moreover, these landing intervals show different stacking patterns and diverse geochemical, petrophysical and geomechanical properties who in turn will affect fracture growth and consequently condition well spacing. All the stratigraphic intervals identified and tested during the delineation phase of the field represent enormous potential resources for the basin. Launching the development phase implies a technical challenge, as the sequential or simultaneous drilling strategy of multiple landing zones has to be determined early in time. This decision will definitely condition logistics, facilities and finally, the economic success of the project.
