| Resumen | The alkylation process reacts light olefins (propylene, butylenes, and/or amylenes) with isobutane in the presence of a strong acid catalyst. Alkylate is an increasingly valuable component for cleaner burning gasoline. Alkylation profit margins are now at historic record levels worldwide and appear poised to grow even stronger. Alkylation feedstock pricing continues to decrease while alkylate demand continues to increase. Latin America has much less installed alkylation capacity than North America so is currently a net importer of significant volumes of alkylate. The value of alkylate as a clean burning high octane low vapor pressure gasoline blendstock is reflected in the increasing volumes of alkylate imports into the region. As fracking continues to increase in the Americas, the cost of isobutane to produce alkylate is decreasing. As more gasoline automobiles are added to the Latin American fleet and consumers are driving longer distances, more gasoline is being consumed. And as clean air legislation continues to become stricter and engine manufacturers strive to increase efficiencies, higher quality gasoline is required. The good news is that the current market forces driving down the costs of the feedstocks and driving up the value of the alkylate product appear to be with us for a very long time. |
