Forecasts relating to natural gas supplies are surrounded with uncertainty because of issues such as the speed - or lack of it - at which new LNG projects are coming onstream in the medium to long term, new legislation relatied to carbon credits and global warming, and not least the effect that the recent global economic downturn may have on gas demand. Nonetheless, the UK is in a unique position amongst industrialised countries of the world inasmuch as it is a significant user of natural gas and is moving from being completely self-sufficient in gas in 2003 to being nearly totally dependent on imports by 2020. Thus, irrespective of the effects of the economic slowdonw on the UK economy, as domestic natural gas production continues to decline the UK will have to import ever larger quantities of gas over the coming years. The important questions to ask are: How much gas will the UK need to import, where will it come from, and how reliable will supplies be? writes Doug Low, Director, Depletion Scotland. |
