| Resumen | Transcripción del resumen del autor. Elastomers are used in many sealing applications in the oil and gas industries. Elastomer seals are utilized in the form of o-rings and gaskets in valves, pumps, sight glasses and hose connections. The variety of elastomer compounds has increased with new formulations being introduced every year that allows use at higher temperature and pressure than ever before. The fluorocarbon or FKM elastomer type is reported to have good resistance to hydrocarbons and so it is widely used in the oil and gas industries. Repeated failures of this type of elastomer have been reported in gas processing systems using fluorocarbon type seals. Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Rubber or EDPM has been reported to provide good service in gas processing systems but it was developed for use in water and steam systems. Marketing for new types of elastomers claim improved performance in gas treating fluids. Testing candidate materials in the process fluid appears to be the prudent choice prior to specifying a material. The data presented in this work represents an attempt to determine if elastomer fluid resistance can be determined in an operating environment using simple tools. The test method development is described in which fourteen selected commercial elastomers were exposed to fourteen gas treating fluids including amine solvents, glycols and foam control additives. Tests were conducted to illustrate the impact of temperature, fluid concentration and exposure period on fluid resistance of the elastomers. Volume, weight and hardness change were the parameters used to evaluate elastomer fluid resistance.
