Resumen Transcripción del abstract original del autor: Japan became active in the R&D area of Methane Hydrate Resource on from around the mid-1990s. Under the leadership of the METI, various approaches are being advanced to realize methane hydrate as an energy resource. They include the “Nankai Trough” METI Exploratory Test Well, the “Collaborative R&D for Methane Hydrate”, and drilling tests conducted in the Mackenzie Delta in Canada. Based on the results, the “Methane Hydrate Exploitation Program” was newly announced in 2001, together with the “Research for Methane Hydrate Resources in Japan” project as a means of putting that plan into force. Working from this plan, the scale of the testing in the Mackenzie Delta was expanded in the first round of onshore production testing implemented as joint international research. Planned for the beginning of 2004, meanwhile, is comprehensive drilling campaign that will seek to clarify the accumulations of these resources in the Nankai Trough offshore Japan. Both of these undertakings are approaches targeting the production of methane gas from methane hydrate as an energy resource in Japan, and have generated steady results to date.
