| Resumen | Transcripción del abstract original del autor: A key ceramic tile manufacturing process stage in which thermal energy is consumed is the tile body drying operation. In countries with the most advanced technology (Italy, Spain, etc.), natural gas is used as fuel in the various tile manufacturing stages, in which the drying stage accounts for 10% of total thermal energy consumption. Ceramic tile bodies are mainly dried in vertical dryers. To enhance the overall energy efficiency of the drying operation, some facilities use cogeneration systems with gas-fuelled internal combustion engines. As a result of the energy balance drawn up at a vertical dryer fitted with a cogeneration system, a series of improvements were planned and implemented to enhance the system’s energy efficiency. The effect of these measures on dried tile technical characteristics and quality was then studied. In particular, the gas flow rate in the dryer stack and recirculating gas flow rate were reduced, which yielded a notable decrease in energy consumption (12-25%) in respect of the starting situation. The effect of the use of cogeneration systems on the distribution of dryer energy consumption was also analysed. A series of improvements are proposed, which could raise cogeneration system energy efficiency by 20-25% compared with the current situation. |
