Resumen Transcripción del abstract original del autor: Liquefied natural gas projects with the total value of around $20 billion are planned for Australia within the next decade. One of the major risks to this vast investment is uncertainty over how to deal with the increase in CO2 emissions that could result from these new developments. A solution to meeting the substantial emission reduction targets, whilst sustaining Australia's economic development, lies in part in developing suitable methodologies for CO2 sequestration (i.e. capture, separation and storage) of potential emissions. One of the most important, high-volume storage options is geological storage. The method, which involves compression, transportation, and injection of supercritical CO2 for storage in geological formations, has been the focus of the APCRC's research program GEODISC. A consortium of Australian and international gas production companies are supporting the program and the APCRC research parties, consisting of government agencies and various academic institutions, are undertaking the research. Preliminary findings have established the relative attractiveness of potential storage sites including the ability to store emissions predicted for the adjacent region, the cost involving transportation, storage and ongoing operations, as well as a variety of technical risks (predominantly geological) as well as some non-geological risks. Some regions with projected high volumes of future emissions, large storage volumes and low storage costs appear potentially viable whilst others appear to be more problematic. Whilst site-specific studies remain to be completed, many high-CO2 gas accumulations appear to have technically suitable storage sites available in the vicinity of either the field development or gas-processing site.
