| Resumen | Transcripción del abstract original del autor: As gas pipeline design provides for ample safety margins, the failure rate of these systems is low. Nevertheless, as any other engineering structure, they can fail, mainly due to the fact that buried pipes eventually suffer the effect of a variety of agents that have an impact on their integrity. Every operator strives to provide consistent safety and reliability throughout the system, avoiding adverse effects for the environment, the employees, or the clients. Thus, the need arises to define an Integrity Plan, aimed at recognizing, locating and subsequently repairing sensitive points in the system, so as to minimize incident risks which, through the application of the best maintenance techniques, may extend the service life of the facilities and the preservation of assets. This, in turn, will help ensure consistent gas supply to the clients and the consideration of the environmental and economic aspects of the business. The development of an Integrity Plan requires a wide range of information which is characteristically difficult to integrate in a common database. A Geographic Information System (GIS) may include information from a variety of sources. The key requirement for the data source is that the location of the variables be known through its x and y coordinates. This study describes the experience acquired by Transportadora de Gas del Sur (TGS) in relation to this issue. It recounts the evolution of the development of an integrity plan, includes a variety of examples of the application of a GIS for the integrity analysis of a pipeline, and lists the advantages obtained through the application of this working procedure. |
