Resumen Transcripción del abstract original del autor: The underground natural gas storage industry in the U.S.A. is mature and robust, with over 80 years of safe and reliable service. There are over 415 storage facilities nationwide, with total working gas capacity of 1.1x1011 m3 (3.9x1012 ft3) and 2.2x109 m3/day (7.8x1010 ft3/day) of deliverability. Underground storage continues to provide pipeline companies and gas utilities with the ability to handle operational swings, to cover seasonal demand variations and to insure the availability of emergency supply, but the profound changes in the U. S. natural gas market since deregulation have impacted gas storage operations. To understand how the storage industry has changed, it is necessary to understand the history of the deregulation process in the U.S. and how deregulation has impacted the entire U.S. natural gas market. This presentation examines the post-deregulation changes in the gas storage industry; reviews some of the solutions employed by storage operators to meet the challenges that result from these changes; and contemplates the future direction of the U.S. gas storage industry.
