Resumen Transcripción del resumen original del autor: In the mid-90’s a joint venture between BP and Sonatrach successfully demonstrated the commercial potential of gas in Southern Algeria, sanctioning the development of the multi-field “In Salah Gas Project“, which will bring 9 billion cubic metres of gas per year to the markets of Southern Europe. A key challenge faced by the jointly staffed In Salah Gas project team was to meet the high environmental commitments that had been outlined by the Algerian Ministry of Mines & Energy and the Sonatrach and BP management. One of the most important aspects of the commitment to manage the environmental impact centres on the export sales gas specification. This requires that the CO2 concentration in the gas stream be less than 0.3%, this significantly below the concentrations present in the In Salah Gas fields, which range between 1% and 9%. The commitment to non-atmospheric disposal of the extracted CO2 stream (~0.66 billion cubic metres per year) that results from the fields production to meet the contracted sales gas volumes meant that an alternative solution to simply venting would be required. Storage and sequestration of the extracted CO2 stream is planned within the aquifer region of the hydrocarbon bearing Carboniferous formation adjacent to the Krechba field, this the most northerly of the gas fields currently under development. The first of three CO2 injection wells has been drilled with results as prognosed from seismic, providing access into the east aquifer reservoir region for storage and sequestration of CO2. This paper outlines the options and solution that have been identified for managing the key environmental issue of CO2 management across the In Salah Gas Project, which will start operating one of the largest sequestration and storage schemes in the world, in 2004. This document provides an outline case study of one of the first major petroleum developments where an integrated emissions mitigation plan was constructed in the initial stages of project design, ahead of development sanction.
