Resumen Transcripción del resumen original del autor: Gazprom and BASF/Wintershall AG have studied the problem of environmental safety of designed, operated and reconstructed underground gas storages (UGSs) in Russia and Germany under the international scientific and technical cooperation. UGSs are included into the Gazprom’s branched gas transmission and distribution system in order to shave seasonal peaks, to create longterm reserves and to secure export gas supply [1]. Russia has a well-developed UGS system that keeps at the moment around 25 % of the annual consumed natural gas with this percentage increasing in future. The systems includes 23 UGSs constructed in aquifers and depleted gas and gas condensate fields. In Germany, a total UGS capacity amounts to 20·109 m3 of active gas. Gas storage facilities both in Russia and Germany are provided with modern equipment that meets international requirements. Along with the UGS geographic extension and the other progressive trends the improvement of environmental safety is also under consideration. The strategy of UGS development calls for modeling a process of their construction and cyclic operation and involving automated control system of technological processes and environmental monitoring. The environmental monitoring system must allow for the evaluation of pollutant amount, inspection and analysis of environmental quality based on physicochemical, biological and other parameters. A general problem of UGS environmental monitoring is solved by a local monitoring of components of the environment and by a regular inspection of technological sites and equipment for revealing possible emission sources. Environmental monitoring must follow both government and industrial regulation. Below are the results of UGS environmental analysis for the period between 1998 and 2002.
