As one realizes that the continuing energy utilization cannot be sustained without having regards for the overwhelming effect of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to the environment, sequestration and utilization for reducing GHG emissions are receiving increasing attention from all sectors. Due attention to carbon dioxide removal in a competitive manner is also needed as it is the only GHG mitigation option that may allow continuing large scale use of fossil fuels. Billions of Barrels of oil remain un-recovered in Canadian reservoirs due to poor sweep and gravity segregation that result in little or no production under certain conditions. Some of these reservoirs will make excellent candidates for greenhouse gas storage. In this process, economic benefits can be achieved by recovering incremental oil. This is also true for high water-saturation zones in communication with the oil zone. Typically, the water cut in such reservoirs increases rapidly during primary production, leading to low primary oil recovery. For these bottomwater reservoirs, recovery performance is poor under conventional waterflood and even poorer if the oil is viscous. In this paper, different operating strategies and scenarios are investigated to understand some of the mysteries involved in a CO2 flood. This, in turn, should lead to broader applications with greater success. This study investigates several important aspects of CO2 injection and focuses on waterflooding and injection of carbon dioxide, using its pure form as well as containing other greenhouse gases as contaminants. The study estimates improved oil recovery for water and greenhouse gas flooding for various injection/production scenarios for reservoirs of Canada. It is found that bottomwater reservoirs can increase the total storage capacity of Canadian reservoirs significantly, meanwhile increasing the recoverable reserve.
