The use of activated carbon (AC) as an adsorbent for NOx removal has been recognized as one of the advanced technologies for the cleanup of flue gases. Fluidized-bed adsorption seems to be a promising technology for increasing the efficiency of NOx adsorption on AC. In this paper a fluidized bed adsorber is considered for this purpose. The behavior of this type of adsorber is studied and a mathematical model is presented based on two-phase theory of fluidization. The proposed mathematical model is solved by a computer program for different operating conditions. The output of the program is the efficiency of the bed for NOx recovery. In order to check the accuracy of the proposed model a pilot-scaled fluidized bed adsorber is erected. The main part of the experimental apparatus is a cylindrical bed of 9-cm diameter and 124 cm total length. The bed contains particles of AC as adsorbent. An upward stream of air, containing NOx as impurity, is used as fluidizing agent. The efficiency of the bed is measured for different operating conditions. The effects of some parameters such as: AC particle size, inlet gas velocity, inlet NOx concentration and weight of AC in the bed are studied on the adsorber efficiency. The experimental data are compared with the data predicted by the model and a good agreement is observed between them. Once the validity of the proposed model is checked, it could be used for obtaining the optimum operating conditions for this type of beds.
