Resumen Resumen del autor, extraído del trabajo. Atmospheric and vacuum residua from heavy crudes with high levels of contaminant metals have little utility and as a result low value. There are incentives to convert and upgrade these residua in order to produce more saleable, transportable and thus valuable products. Heavy oil conversion and upgrading of heavy crudes is currently carried out commercially through processes such IFP’s H-Oil Process, which utilizes an ebullated-bed reactor. This process has the unique feature of being able to convert heavy feedstocks with high impurity contents while operating with a very long cycle time. This is accomplished at relatively high severity and through daily on-line catalyst replacement of a small portion of the catalyst bed. The level of conversion, even with this state-of the-art technology, is limited by the stability of the unconverted residue and deteriorating economics as the conversion exceeds approximately 80 percent. Deeper conversion of heavy crudes and improved economics can be accomplished though the combination of conversion/upgrading processes. Deeper conversion will reduce the quantity of residuals such as asphalt, heavy fuel oil or coke. We have investigated, at development state, the combination of the ebullated-bed H-Oil Process and the solvent deasphalting (SDA) of the unconverted vacuum residue. In this very promising scheme, the H-Oil unconverted vacuum residue is sent to the SDA Unit and separated into deasphalted oil (DAO) stream and a residual asphalt product. The valuable DAO can either be recycled back to the H-Oil Reactor for further conversion and upgrading and/or combined with the H-Oil derived distillates for downstream hydrotreating. The net asphalt production is relatively low and this product can be sold or gasified to produce hydrogen. This scheme increases the conversion of the heavy crude oil to nearly 90 percent. The paper will present the current status of the H-Oil Process and provide commercial yield and product quality estimates and preliminary economics on the configurations discussed above.
