Resumen Resumen del autor, extraido del trabajo. Imperial Oil Limited's Cold Lake production project is located in Northeast Alberta, approximately 600 kilometres from Calgary. The company acquired 77,000 hectares of oil-sands leases between 1958 and 1962 and has been actively developing this resource for the past three decades. Current bitumen production of 130,000 barrels per day from approximately 900 million barrels of remaining proved reserves qualifies Cold Lake as North America's largest in-situ thermal operation. The bitumen is contained in unconsolidated sands at an average depth of 450 metres below surface. The oil is very heavy, with an API gravity of 10 degrees and a viscosity of over 100,000 centipoise at reservoir conditions. These characteristics have presented difficult challenges from recovery, processing, transportation and marketing perspectives. Commercial success at Cold Lake can be attributed to unique technological approaches. Imperial's approach to technology has been based on three elements - dedicated research and development, field piloting and staged development. The future at Cold Lake will continue to be a combination of technical and commercial adaptation. Near-term technology development is focused on enhancement of existing thermal operations, including the use of power and steam cogeneration. In the longer term, initiatives range from non-thermal recovery techniques to field upgrading.
