WELL INTEGRITY ON FIELD LIFE EXTENSION

WELL INTEGRITY ON FIELD LIFE EXTENSION - 12 p.
Oil and Gas industry is under transformation. Shortage on capital is forcing companies to find different solutions for keeping a healthy and sustainable operation. Extending life of wells to try to enhance oil recovery is of interest. Several onshore and offshore wells have reached more than 20 years old and there is still potential for production or alternative use (e.g., turning some into injection wells, gas storage). In any case to ensure a safe operation is a must. The usage of proper and real-time integrity management models and also risk-based tools for support decisions on operate, repair or abandon ageing wells is strongly recommended. Moreover, day after day, new or revised standards, industry practices, regulatory framework, etc., are published and more and more are turning to be emphatics to the importance of well integrity assurance. A robust well integrity management system plays an important role for setting the pillars. Embedded on it, risk assessments are demanded and shall be used to support decision during the well lifespan. Consequently, the usage of well risk assessment when targeting to extend any well life is imperative. This paper explores the fundaments of well integrity and its barriers, a safe and fruitful life extension of production wells and the benefit of managing well integrity by using a dynamic risk-based and time dependent methodology. It concludes that soon a cost-effective and robust well integrity management system will be anchored on real-time risk assessment models (decision tools) embedded in a digital environment.
