Transcripción del abstract original del autor: Utilities companies merge with the result that whole departments are rationalized away or employees go into early retirement. Know-how suddenly leaves the company which is left without adequate replacement. At the same time, official requirements on energy supply companies are increasing. Networks need to be operated safely and economically, independent of changes in the utilities industry. Between April 1999 and October 2000, Mainova AG in Frankfurt am Main (Germany) developed a “Digital Pipeline Monitoring System“ to address the internal and external changes. We called our system “P.I.W.U.S“. The main tasks of P.I.W.U.S are: Accelerate and standardize information paths Reduce travelling times in the network Exploit optimization potential in pipeline monitoring Make the employees’ network knowledge and information available at the push of a button The system has now been in productive operation since January 2001. After minor modifications, P.I.W.U.S now enjoys a very high degree of acceptance by our technical management and operating personnel.
