Transcripción del abstract original del autor: The Shizuoka Gas Company is a midsize "Local Distribution Company" in Shizuoka Prefecture (central Japan). This presentation focuses on the gas utility's efforts to remain competitive following the decision, a decade ago, to convert to natural gas and construct its own LNG terminal. The company's decision to actively promote natural gas-based co-generation systems to industrial users serves the dual purpose of increasing natural gas sales and contributing to local efforts to combat global warming. The area on the southern slopes of Mt Fuji is a bustling industrial hub,home to a wide variety of energy-consuming -and polluting- industries. Both the Prefectural and the Municipal Government are encouraging the introduction of natural gas-fired co-generation systems as an effective way to cut local greenhouse gas emissions. In sharing its experience of a business model based on close cooperation with the local authorities and on customized services to industrial gas consumers, Shizuoka Gas hopes to offer an encouraging example to other small-size utilities wishing to expand natural gas utilization in an increasingly competitive energy market environment.
