Civil society is placing ever-increasing expectations on business for meeting environmental, social and economic development needs. Attempting to meet the varied expectations of a broad range of external stakeholders, including our customers, shareholders, communities, governments, various interests groups and the general public, poses a significant challenge. This challenge can best be met through effective multi-stakeholder partnerships. Suncor Energy is attempting to reconcile the economic, social and environmental needs and expectations of its various stakeholders associated with its current operations and growth opportunities. This paper examines Suncor Energy's experience in multi-stakeholder partnerships in pursuit of sustainable development that includes planning, decision-making and problem-solving.
