High Pressure (HP) gas pipelines are defined as overland gas pipelines operating at pressures higher than 10 MPa (namely in the range from 10 to 15 MPa) with optimum pressures around 14 MPa. The interest for the development for HP pipelines arises from: q gas pipeline systems will remain the basic transport solution for accommodating the future increase of demand of natural gas; q the new major trunk lines, planned or envisaged for the next decade, will link new production areas with new expanding markets and are featured by very large capacity, in the range from 15 to 30 GSm3/y, and very long distances, in the range from 3000 to 6000 km. This paper describes the technical features and configurations of long distance gas pipeline systems based on High Pressure transportation concept. The economic advantages of HP transport vs. LP transport, expressed in terms of investment and operating costs, are described. The findings of the sensitivity analysis, carried out on the case study i.e. a transmission system of 5,000 km for a specified transport capacity of 15 to 30 GSm3/y and considering the build-up of the transport capacity of the pipeline system, are presented and discussed. = WPC (16th.)
