Reservoir petrophysics traditionally focuses on the production of hydrocarbons. Due to the need to evaluate shale plays, non-reservoir rocks in which the reservoir is created through a non-matrix stimulation system, an essential requirement has been arisen to develop a petrophysical evaluation focused on hydraulic fracturing. In this context, many techniques successfully applied in conventional petrophysics lack of applicability, therefore new technologies and methodologies must be implemented, to identify the best zones, within a vertical pilot well, to achieve successful hydraulic fractures, or the best layers for landing point.Additionally, traditional petrophysics is not a sufficient method for this purpose, and it should be complemented by a basic 1D geomechanical analysis, which contemplates 3D mechanical rock properties, pore pressure and the three in situ stress magnitude components. It is also necessary to migrate from isotropic rock models to models that consider horizontal anisotropy - high influence on shales due to laminations -, and vertical anisotropy caused by natural fracturing.This study describes the workflow developed to characterize the Vaca Muerta formation from openhole logs and laboratory data (DRX, FRX and TOC). It should be noted that it has been worked under the blind test mode, not counting all the laboratory data a priori to calibrate the results of log analysis.This paper also presents the results of the good fit between the predicted and actual fracture pressures that indicates the high robustness of the applied method, therefore, this is relevant to achieve accuracy in the input data for the hydraulic fracture design and to achieve a successful stimulation.
