The magnitude and orientation of the in-situ stresses are some of the geomechanical attributes that have a high impact for the understanding of the geomechanical behavior of rocks in operations related to drilling, stimulation and hydrocarbon production. The estimation and calibration process of the magnitude and orientation of the in-situ stresses is usually based on the identification of the width and location of breakouts in image logs. In highly deviated wells that are not aligned with one of the principal in-situ stresses, the location and width of breakouts is a function of the magnitude and orientation of the in-situ stresses. This work proposes a methodology for the characterization of the magnitude and orientation of horizontal stresses in wells not aligned with one of the principal in-situ stresses based on wellbore failure location (breakouts). The proposed methodology can be applied in wells where there is a multi-arm-oriented caliper log from which the location of breakouts can be obtained. The proposed methodology was implemented in the stress characterization in a deviated well with a 6-arm oriented caliper log.
