The Vaca-Muerta- Quintuco (VM-Q) (Middle Tithonian-Lower Valanginian) mixed system is one of the most prolific unconventional shale oil and gas plays outside the USA. Deposition was dominated by marine deposits where VacaMuerta Formation (VMFm.) represents the basinal, northwest-ward prograding shale/carbonate units and Quintuco Formation (QFm.) corresponds to shallow marine, more aggrading carbonate-dominated mixed deposits. Lithostratigraphic boundaries are diachronous where VMFm. is the time equivalent basinal succession to the shelfal, higher energy QFm.A high-resolution sequence stratigraphic framework was established to contribute to the understanding of the VM-Q second order transgressive-regressive mixed clastic-carbonate sequence. Based on the integration of a large multi survey 3D/2D seismic database with well data and geochemistry information, a regional 3D geological conceptual model was built that captures the heterogeneities at different scales. The model incorporates more than 2900 petrographic data points from cuttings over 23 wells distributed along the basin. Textural components, mineralogy, organic matter content and fossil distribution were analyzed and cross-correlated with wireline logs and seismic data. This study documents the 3D polarity and variability of the system on both dip and strike directions based on the interpretation of several regional cross-sections. Main interpreted seismic horizons were calibrated with higher-frequency cycles interpreted from well cuttings. Within the eight seismic sequences, facies associations vary according to their position within the depositional profile: a) shelf interior deposits represented mainly by carbonate-rich facies in the southeast coeval with more mixed facies towards the southwest; b) Slope deposits characterized by monotonous wacke-packestone facies, and c) basinal deposits showing the highest TOC content in the oldest transgressive sequence, progressively decreasing in younger and more proximal basinal facies.
