Resumen del autor, extraído del artículo: YPF's involvement in petrochemicals was rather limited through 1993. Inside its main refinery, located in La Plata - 60 km south of Buenos Aires - only one petrochemical unit producing LAB was in full operation. In 1993 YPF acquired the main petrochemicals assets in La Plata and a series of dramatic changes started to occur. On one hand, its strength in raw materials availability made YPF the ideal partner in Joint Ventures, starting its participation in Polypropylene, Ethylene, and Polyethylene business. On the other hand, the consolidation of various petrochemical activities in the same location enabled YPF to analyze different alternatives for its petrochemical business. This integration has generated several benefits to YPF, which are extensively analyzed in this paper, and were mainly based in its strong raw material supplier position, its optimal utilization and a whole integrated operation of its facilities.
