MPG - Lurgi multi purpose gasification recent applications and experiences

In: Summary: Resumen del autor, extraído del trabajo. Multi Purpose Gasification "MPG" is a process for the partial oxidation of hydrocarbons delivering a synthesis gas composed mainly of CO and H2. Different -even unmixable- hydrocarbon-containing feeds can be gasified: ranging from natural gas, coal oil, heavy refinery residues, asphalts, tars to slurries and chemical wastes. With the versatility of MPG the feedstock flexibility has increased tremendously: the refinery can now consider heavier crudes and deep deasphalting and always MPG will convert the concentrated "leftovers" into useful syngas. Additionally, wastes like tank sludges and contaminated (lube) oils can be disposed off in this unit, helping to create the truly clean refinery. The paper discusses the origin of the process and its main features and then concentrates on industrial applications - proven and planned: experience from a gasification-based methanol and IGCC power plant as well as refinery applications for production of hydrogen and electric power.
